A minimalist and almost geometric simplicity underlies this classic design, which integrates well with a wide range of decors, from Early American and Dutch Colonial to Contemporary Farmhouse or Industrial.
The motifs for both our Tulip and Heart sconces derive from Pennsylvania Dutch 'Hex Signs’. Around the mid to late 19th century, folks in that region began painting or otherwise affixing such symbols were to barns and other buildings.
Some ascribe to them a talismanic purpose (for example, to ward against disease or evil) while others maintain that they are used purely as folk-art decoration (or in the local parlance, "Chust for nice*”). See this rather interesting source:
